To Save a Life

Alyssa Loomis

I am what you would consider "elbows deep" in the medical field. Working on an ambulance and in an ER, I've encountered death. It's never an easy thing to handle emotionally, but I believe I've found a marvelous loophole. One that I even try to project onto my coworkers. If God wants to take someone home with him, there's nothing anyone can do. Not even the most accredited hospital with the most intelligent and medically competent people. It seems only fitting that the one who breathes air in our lungs, sucks it back out. People do try to play God in the medical field, but if my relationship with God has taught me anything, it's that no one is as sovereign as he is. God is also a miracle worker. I've seen people who should've been dead, come back to life. A sort of resurrection.

I may not have physically died, but I experienced my own resurrection in life. I died to my old self, and am adopted into this new life with the Lord. I was baptized in December of last year, and decided to strengthen my walk with the Lord more and attend ELC's bible school. Hands down, best decision I have ever made. It taught me so much about our Savior, and in return, taught me a lot about my own self. Being plucked from a desolate and lonely position and placed into an atmosphere of abundant and overwhelming love was a culture shock(in a good way). I was the eldest member who lived in community, but I learned a plethora of things from my younger peers. I was also given the opportunity to not have to work for a certain amount of time. A sabbath that lasted 2 months or so. That was huge for me. It forced me to swallow my pride and allow God to provide.

The biggest thing of all that I learned to instill was trust. I trust that I'm exactly where God wants me to be. Fixing, healing, and comforting the broken, the hurting and the lost. I get the wonderful opportunity to pray over people and shed some of the Lord's love. Bible School has made me bold. I can't imagine living life without having my relationship with God and I don't want others to live without his love and presence either. I may get to be front and center stage to people who need to be saved, but everyone has an opportunity to save others. Not just medically. I'll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite books that I highly recommend:

"And if you think about it, the reason God chose Moses was to save many lives. And the same goes for Jonah and Peter, all the apostles, and Jesus. And us, too, for that matter. We were all meant to save many lives. God is always trying to save lives, and it seems like He usually uses the least likely people to do it. So the next time God asks you to do something that is completely inexplicable, something you’re sure is a prank because it requires a decision or courage that’s way over your pay grade, something that might even save lives, say yes."  Excerpt from the book Love Does by Bob Goff.
