Labeling Easter

Eph 1:4-8

Long before he laid down earth's foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love.  Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.  Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, his blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people — free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free!

Col 1:13-14

For he has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan's kingdom and brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son,  who bought our freedom with his blood and forgave us all our sins.

Ps 103:11-14

For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west..  The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him.  For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust.

Col 2:13-15

When you were stuck in your old sin-dead life, you were incapable of responding to God. God brought you alive — right along with Christ! Think of it! All sins forgiven,  the slate wiped clean, that old arrest warrant canceled and nailed to Christ's Cross.

1 John 1:7

But if we are living in the light of God's presence, just as Christ does, then we have wonderful fellowship and joy with each other, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from every sin.

Acts 16:30-31

Then he brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household

Ps 32:1-6

What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record.  There was a time when I wouldn't admit what a sinner I was. But my dishonesty made me miserable and filled my days with frustration.   All day and all night your hand was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water on a sunny day until I finally admitted all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, "I will confess them to the Lord." And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone.  Now I say that each believer should confess his sins to God when he is aware of them

Rom 6:3-6,14

  • Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus - we have become a part of him, and so we died with him, so to speak?  For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism (by identifying with Him).
  • And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.  Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.   We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives.  We are no longer slaves to sin. Sin can no longer tell you how to live….. After all, you're not living under that old tyranny any longer. You're living in the freedom of God.

Philippians 1:6

  • There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that God who began the good work within you will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you is finally finished on that day

Rom 8:11-14

It stands to reason, doesn't it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he'll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!

So don't you see that we don't owe this old do-it-yourself life one red cent.  There's nothing in it for us, nothing at all. The best thing to do is give it a decent burial and get on with your new life. God's Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go!

Rom 12:1-2

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.  Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Gal 6:7-8

Don't be misled: No one makes a fool of God. What a person plants, he will harvest. The person who plants selfishness, ignoring the needs of others — ignoring God! —    harvests a crop of weeds. All he'll have to show for his life is weeds! But the one who plants in response to God, letting God's Spirit do the growth work in him, harvests a crop of real life, eternal life. So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit.
